The process always begins with a story, and each of our ties has one.
Over the years our tie collections, which are all designed by Duncan Quinn himself, have been inspired by such things as tattoos, memento mori, fine art, spy movies, steampunk fiction, and mathematic formulae. Some are even intricate motifs (such as our Bond and Fleur de Lys ties), which have to be meticulously placed so that when tied in a knot, the motif appears in the correct position. It’s not easy. On top of that, each color combination is limited to a short run of ties, typically no more than four are made. In the entire world.
Once we have a design in mind, we get our ideas over to our silk weavers in Sudbury, England and fine tune the style of weave and the color palette. Initial color options are then woven pursuant to instructions on base warps and colored wefts that we want to add into the mix… whether one or two, sometimes up to eight!
Our ties are all then cut, stitched, and made by hand. The tie silk itself is woven on 350 end looms that are almost exclusive to our weavers. They’ve been weaving silk on site since before the Napoleonic wars, and are experts at producing the best quality in the world. All silk is ‘Pure Dyed’, meaning that no artificial additives have been added to weight the fabric. This wholly pure combination gives unsurpassed quality, handle and balance.
So grab a few, and watch the room open up as you give everyone an opening gambit for their conversation. Our ties are meant to polarize and create a conversation. So be ready with a response… and we’ll leave the rest to you.
